About Project

Cleartrip was launched at a time when online travel booking was gaining ground in India. It was facing competition from homegrown brands like Makemytrip, Yatra and travel gurus well as international players like Expedia and Travelocity. Cleartrip was created with a clear set of differentiators i.e. simplicity, speed, informality, unclutteredness, international content and a secure online booking backbone. But these were secondary issues in the mind of a large chunk of consumers who were looking at the online booking offering for quick cheap tickets. Another aspect of this challenge was that most travel agents, online or offline, traditionally used print media and digital media, as they believed calls to action were a critical aspect of their business. This meant that those with larger budgets always managed to dwarf the smaller ones, impacting Cleartrip’s visibility significantly.

What we did

One of our primary recommendations was to clearly separate the one-time cheap deal hunters from the long term consumers, and speak only with the latter. This would create a whole new dimension in the online booking space that was competing heavily on pricing enabling us to effectively present the brand strengths of Cleartrip to the consumers. We recommended that Cleartrip launch with a full page corporate print campaign that would also double up as a price point reference. Parallel to that, run a TVC that would humour the discerning consumer and make the portal a leading innovator in the category.

Within a month of its launch Cleartrip had a healthy 1 million hits to its credit, and over time managed to position itself as a category leader in the ‘packed to capacity’ online travel booking category. The campaign also caused a spurt in the actual bookings jumping from 1500 a day to 3500 a day, making Cleartrip the undisputed #2 in the online ticket sales business.
